The Adoptee

Our pond draws all kinds of transient waterfowl. We've had everything from Wood Duck pairs to Blue Herons. Sometimes they stay for a few months, like the Wood Duck pairs and other times it's just a one time thing.

For the last week we've had a young Merganser calling our pond home. I thought it would only be for a day or two, but it appears that my Call ducks don't mind the company and have welcomed the little addition. I imagine at some point she will feel the pull to fly away and look for her own kind. But for now the Calls as well as myself enjoy her company. :)

She's so much smaller...and very lovely. It must be so wonderful to have a pond. Does it ever freeze up in the winter, so you could use it to skate on?

Can you fish from it, too?
I've always thought it would be nice to have a pond or a creek on my property. Lucky you! :)

Lisa, it does freeze up but I don't think I would be brave enough to stand on it!:) It's a mud bottom and I've almost lost my boots trying to wade into it!

You could fish from it...but you would catch nothing but goldfish! :) There are some monster fish in there now, but they would definitely not make very good eating!

I had to fence the pond off because the young dog, Kylie, would swim in it 24/7!

Well, you know what they say: "Birds of a feather..."

Cute pictures.

I envy you your pond - my husband and I love to birdwatch. I also think it would've been fun to raise ducks.
Do you ever see blue heron at your pond? What's the most exotic thing you've seen in your pond (other than Kylie)? LOL

Danni, we get Blue Heron quite often. I have stocked my pond with feeder goldfish (some which are now HUGE!) so I don't mind them being in there and fishing. I enjoy seeing the kingfishers "doing their thing" too. I'd have to say the most exotic is the pairs of Wood Ducks we get from time to time...maybe really not that exotic but they sure are exotic looking!
